Types:

Typically there are 3 types of heating oil that are commercially available.

  • Number 2 fuel oil is the normal version of heating oil that is used for residential locations. It is light weight and does not require preheating to be used
  • Number 4 fuel is a commercial heating oil for burner installations. Again no preheating is required.
  • Number 6 fuel oil is a high viscosity oil that requires preheating. While it produces the most heat per gallon, it is dirty and requires a larger amount of maintenance and can contain a larger number of impurities.

What is Heating Oil?

Heating oil consists of a mixture of petroleum derived hydrocarbons that condense at a lower temperature that petroleum jelly or lubricating oil, but at a higher temperature than kerosene. It is a low viscosity product for use in furnaces or boilers.

Delivery is normally handled by tanker truck and is stored in storage tanks, usually above ground possibly outside, but often in basements or garages. Occasionally it is delivered to underground storage tanks.
